The images show a very common problem that occurs with leather upholstery. The area where your head is positioned can cause the leather’s top surface of colour & sealant to peel. This colour loss or leather breakdown is due to the natural oils in the skin transferring and penetrating into the leather.
If this problem is caught in the early stages the leather colour can be reapplied. The area would need to be degreased, cleaned & prepped before recolouring the leather. The preparation before carrying out a leather repair is paramount to achieve a strong finish.
In many cases, this colour loss (especially on the head area) colour loss to your sofa mat has deteriorated too much. The natural oils can saturate the leather to the point where they cannot be cleaned and pulled out of the leather. This leather damage is referred to as contamination (from natural body oils). To try and carry out a leather colour repair in this situation would be pointless as it would not last. Attempting a leather colouring repair on an oily surface when adhesion is required is just not going to be successful.
Leather Restoration, work and leather repair work require the same amount of attention, the only difference is restoration work would be a bigger expense to cover.
In both cases when any leatherwork is carried out, it can’t be rushed. There are drying times that are important to ensure a strong leather repair. Some Leather Products have a curing time of five days!
This doesn’t mean to say the furniture cannot be used, there are just specific measures that need to be taken regarding caring for the Leather in this period.
